Marie: Moving In, Part One
TODAY WAS THE day I was moving in with James. Weâd decided the evening before, after listening to Dadâs horrible interview, and James saidâwell, shouted, reallyâthat heâd do everything in his power to stop Patrick from hurting me or my family anymore.
Those words touched my heart, and when he asked me his usual question about when I was actually moving in, I finally said, âHow about tomorrow?â He was thrilled, and I was thrilled, for a while, anyhow.
But now, today was the day, and Jasmine boohooed a little bit when I came back to her place and grabbed my pathetic boxes of stuff. She followed me out to the Explorer, and when I opened the door, she grabbed me in a frantic bear hug.
âIâm going to miss you so much,â she cried. âThe place wonât be the same without you.â
âYeah,â I said, hugging her back. âItâll finally be quiet.â
âQuiet?â She laughed. âYou do remember I have three kids, donât you?â
âYeah, well, itâll be quieter. Not so many nasty phone calls and such.â
âDonât you forget that youâre always welcome back here,â she said, and pushed away from me. She crossed her arms over her chest, and I could see that her bottom lip was quivering. I knew that if I didnât get out of there quickly, Iâd have to deal with a crying spree, and I wasnât sure that I wouldnât join in.
âIâm counting on it,â I said. âAnd remember, youâre top of the list for dog sitting.â
âGood,â she said. âI like that little dog.â
I jumped into the driverâs seat, closed the door, and waved as I drove away. Iâd only been living there for a few months, but it almost felt like I was leaving home.
âI can always go back,â I muttered as I drove around the corner and lost sight of Jasmine, still standing in front of her house in her flower-patterned housecoat and slippers. âIf things donât work out.â
Then I shook that bad thought from my head. Nothing was going to go wrong. This was the beginning of the rest of my life, and it was going to be great.
Unfortunately, the rest of my life would have to wait until I picked up Sylvia Worth and went to talk to Marvin Secord again.
Sylvia had called just as I was heading to Jasmineâs to get my stuff. âI want to go talk to Marvin,â she said. âAre you free?â
Iâd said yes and offered to drive. I hadnât even told her about what I was planning on doing that day. Of course, Sylvia noticed the boxes rattling around in the back of the Explorer when I picked her up.
âDid Jasmine talk you into taking some stuff to Goodwill for her?â she asked. âWe can probably stop there after we talk to Marvin, if you want.â
âThose boxes are holding my belongings,â I said stiffly. The fact that most of my stuff had originated at Goodwill didnât brighten my mood. âIâm moving out of Jasmineâs place.â
âDid she kick you out?â Sylvia gasped.
